Tornadoes and flooding
Tornadoes and torrential rains affected several southern states the weekend of May 1, 2010. Nearly 20 inches of rain in a two day period caused severe flooding and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes - by cars if possible, but often by rescue boats. At least 19 people have died as a result of the storms.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has been in contact with the Presbytery office in Arkansas and learned that the tornadoes hit in areas where there is no Presbyterian presence. The Presbytery will let us know of any identified needs that we can be a part of.
In Middle Tennessee, the Presbytery Executive indicates that the flooding is extensive, and probably not over yet. The presbytery is requesting PDA assistance and a National Response Team visit to the area as soon as the water recedes and access to the area is possible.
Information on Tennessee Presbyterian churches affected by flooding can be found on Synod of Living Waters online publication, The Presbyterian Voice.

Gulf Coast oil spill
Efforts are underway by many experienced organizations to minimize damage from the huge oil spill caused by last week's rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. A report from the Church World Service Emergency Response Committee states, “ This type of clean up needs to be carefully supervised by experts — no one should just go out and try to do something, as it is very dangerous to human health.”
The following phone numbers from the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) are provided to help area residents:
To report oiled or injured wildlife, please call 1-800-557-1401.
To discuss spill related damage claims, please call 1-800-440-0858.
To report oil on land, or for general Community and Volunteer Information, please call 1-866-448-5816
LEAN has been established in Louisiana for many years. Following Hurricane Katrina, the United Church of Christ worked with the network on environmental issues related to an oil spill – everything from personal protection equipment for home owners to working with a scientist to test land impacted. Visit LEAN’s website.
The Environmental Ministries Office of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has a blog, Eco-Journey, that includes information on the oil spill.
PDA will hold a conference call on Friday, May 7, 2010 with all affected presbyteries to discuss the situation and determine an appropriate Presbyterian response.

This Sunday, April 18th following the morning worship service there will be a Soup Luncheon Fundraiser to support the Youth Triennium trip this summer. Triennium is a wonderful gathering of high school aged youth that only happens every 3 years because it is so huge and amazing! But it takes money to send our youth and we need your help...and what could be better than not having to worry about what is for lunch this month on Sundays :) |

From the Environmental Stewardship Committee:
Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. Romans 6:4 NRSV Green Bible
Green Tip: The U.S. has 3.9 million miles of paved roads, enough to circle the earth at the equator 157 times. Every time it rains the water flows off our roofs, sidewalks, and driveways and rolls down the street to the sewers. As it goes it picks up pesticides, oil, garbage and dirt products which wash into our waterways. Things we can do to help keep storm water clean: 1) Wash your car on the lawn or at a commercial car wash; not in the driveway or street. 2) Compost or recycle yard waste; 3) Sweep - don’t - hose driveways and sidewalks; 4) Use fertilizers and pesticides sparingly, if at all, and properly dispose of them and other household chemicals.
Happy Earth Day Week! |

Responding to the earthquake in Chile
A devastating magnitude 8.8
earthquake struck Chile on Saturday, February 27, 2010, shattering buildings
and bridges and causing the issuance of tsunami warnings for much of Pacific
rim. Damage was particularly heavy in Concepción. That city, Chile’s
second-largest metropolitan area, is located only 70 miles from the
earthquake's epicenter.
Reports as of Monday morning, March
1, 2010 list the death toll at over 700, with a potential of more deaths as
tsunamis hit coastal areas. Approximately 1.5 million homes have been
destroyed.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is
working with our ecumenical partner Church World Service (CWS) in Chile to
provide basic humanitarian assistance and to help local partners in assessing
the needs. One Great Hour of Sharing funds will be used
for an initial response. Gifts for responding in Chile may be designated for
DR000185.
CWS emergency response staff have
been in contact with colleagues on the ground in Chile and is coordinating
their response with two Chilean agencies: FASIC (Fundacion de Ayuda Social de
las Iglesia Cristianas) and the Humanitarian Team of the Methodist Church of
Chile, IMECH. IMECH is part of the National Emergency Office (ONEMI),
the national coordinating body headed by the President. ONEMI has local
chapters in all regions, where coordination takes place with local counterparts.
PDA will also coordinate with
PC(USA) World Mission and their work with CLAI (Latin American Council of
Churches) and with ACT Alliance member Lutheran World Federation.
Carlos Cardenas, PC(USA) mission
co-worker in Nicaragua, is assisting in communication of assessments.
John Robinson, PDA associate for
national response, was in contact with presbytery staff in the Pacific rim
areas over the weekend, in case there were needs arising from tsunamis in the
aftermath of the quake. However, the effects of the tsunami did not
reach the United States.
Reports will be posted on the PDA
Web site as assessments continue and information becomes available.

As we mourn the loss, may we also celebrate his life! The visitation for Don Dobson will be Friday at the High School from 4pm - 7pm and the Service will be here in the Sanctuary, Saturday morning at 11am. As coach, teacher, and christian, Don has had a great impact on lots of youth and adults alike, the visitation and service are sure to be filled with people and praises for our friend. Fellow members of the Fulton Presbyterian church may we help to make people as comfortable as possible as they deal with this loss and as visitors in our church. Help where you can.
Many prayers and blessings on Ramona and their family especially. |

The Souper Bowl tables looked mostly equal Friday morning when I stopped by to help Janet get more connected to what I have going online so far. The SERVE Food Pantry is always needing donations and voting for the Colts is a great way to give :-) If you look to the menus on the left of this website you will see that the Newsletters are available online again. YAY!! We should be able to leave the past few weeks up so that people can catch up or look back for stuff, but as a free site the storage isn't unlimited. Also be sure to check out the Events Calendar. I quickly showed Janet how to keep that updated with all of the church activities and more and more should be showing up on there. We were even thinking about how it would be a good place to check before someone sets up in advance for their event, since the fellowship hall in particular is used for lots of different activities throughout the week. Scheduling is hard to keep up with so hopefully this will make it a little easier. We are taking steps toward a better web presence, keep with us, the best is yet to come. Smile, Rob |
